We thank you for your interest in serving as a Life Changing Mentor for the Los Angeles County Schools Dollars for Scholars Scholarship program.
Life Changing Mentors
Encourage the total growth of a young, promising
person whose needs and interests are the mentor's primary consideration; |
Are connected with scholarship recipients, who over a two- to five-year period form a unique bond of friendship. |
It has been our experience that mentorship:
Helps students broaden their intellectual and cultural horizons; |
Assists students in improving academic performance, and completing an advanced education; |
Assists youth in accessing the resources, skills and tools needed for intellectual, emotional and economic independence. |
Toward that end, we are here to help students develop leadership skills, a stronger
self-concept, healthy life choices, volunteerism and career exploration.
WHO ARE OUR MENTORS?
Our mentors are:
Mature and trusted adults 25 and older who are a supportive resource to our scholarship students; |
Not required to have a college degree; |
Comfortable assisting a student through the college planning process under the guidance of Los Angeles County Schools' Dollars for Scholars board members; |
Reside all over the United States; |
Stable role models who provide a positive sense of identity and purpose. |
Mentors are not asked to take the place or role of parents, teachers or counselors. There are no specific
life experiences required of our mentors; we only ask that they be good listeners, reliable, patient, flexible and accepting of differences.
