| At the Los Angeles County Schools' Dollars for Scholars program each of our mentors bring a wide
range of life experiences to the mentoring relationship.
They are:
 |
 |
Genuinely interested in the life of their mentee, and |
 |
 |
Provide the mentee an opportunity to talk with, and share their wants, needs and expectations. |
As a result our mentors are a wonderful source for advice and information, who listen attentively to their mentees goals, fears,
objectives, and successes. Our mentors help their mentee in three key areas: advice, access and advocacy.
Advice:
Things that may seem straightforward to an adult are often mysterious to our students. From time to time, the mentee
may need a second opinion or a different perspective - our mentors provide that. Our mentors are in the unique position
to offer a young person what they ask for- which is another caring adult who helps them think through problems.
Access:
One of the most valuable tools provided by our mentors is connecting their mentee with people, opportunities, and
information that are otherwise out of reach. That's what access is all about - helping the mentee find and get involved in
new situations or find new resources.
Advocacy:
Our mentors are advocates for their mentee - in other words, they work on the student's behalf to get them the recognition
they deserve or the resources they need to resolve issues or problems.
Our mentors have helped our students develop leadership skills, a stronger self-concept, and understand the need for
healthy life choices.
