Letter from the BOARD CHAIR
"And in the end it's not the years in your life. It's the life in your years."
--Abraham Lincoln
In just two years, a half-century will have passed since several thoughtful women proposed to the
Presbytery the concept of providing retirement communities for the older adult. Following on the
heels of the Great Depression, they had witnessed first hand the extreme uncertainties of World War II.
Undeterred by uncertain times and undaunted by the notion of personal and financial limits, they pressed
forward without reservation. Out of their commitment and volunteerism, funds were raised, caring communities
were created, and Southern California Presbyterian Homes (SCPH) was born.
Concerned that some residents might out live their assets, these visionary women continued their fund-raising efforts.
Today, thanks to their foresight, SCPH and its Foundation continues to receive philanthropic support from numerous
benefactors in support of its benevolent and capital improvement needs. It can be said that no resident has been
asked to leave because they have, through no fault of their own, outlived their assets.
On behalf of the Directors, Trustees and the Foundation's staff, I wish to express my gratitude to everyone who
in the year 2002 generously supported our efforts to enhance the lives of our clients and residents.
Deferred, cash and in-kind gifts totaled more $3,000,000. It cost the Foundation less than 10 cents to raise one dollar.
Faced with rising uncertainty in financial markets, the Board of Directors, in the latter part of 2001, chose to move
way temporarily from all exposure to common stocks. Gift funds were placed with a new investment manager.
At year's end, 2002, invested gift funds amounted to $9,000,000.
The Foundation has begun to update its strategic plan. This process will involve several key players as we continue to
explore additional avenues of philanthropic interest in support of new and innovative programs and services provided by
SCPH and its affiliates.
Once again, I wish to thank this year's generous family of benefactors. I would be remiss if I didn't commend SCPH's
dedicated staff for their commitment to the SCPH Mission and to the Foundation's Purpose. Thanks to the active members
who serve as members of the Board of Trustees and who serve as Directors on the Foundation's Board, volunteerism is alive
and well at SCPH.
